Central cyclists can look forward to the Clutha Gold Trail growing by 62km in August, extending the journey from Lake Roxburgh Village to Waihola to be a 135km route fit for most riders.

The new grade two trail encompasses brief on-road sections around Lawrence, Waitahuna and Milton, two tunnels, and rail cuttings as it follows the old railway.

Tourism Central Otago (TCO) head of destination Anthony Longman said the extension adds to the network of trails across Otago.

“[It] is the first in a series of extensions that will ultimately connect Queenstown and Wānaka right through to Dunedin.”

The new portion from Lawrence to Waihola adds a distinctly different experience and range of landscapes to the other Great Rides.

Cyclists will experience farming scenery, woodlands, wetlands and a boardwalk around Lake Waihola.

Anthony said cycle tourism has been one of the key areas booming in the past couple of years with our domestic markets, and with e-bikes and active recreation becoming popular.

“The expanding network provides another reason for visitors to travel to our regions and experience something new, or come back and explore a different trail or town.”

TCO and the Otago Trails Marketing Group have been capturing video and imagery of the new trail sections ahead of the opening.

“We have worked with Clutha Development to support those looking to develop new or existing businesses along the trail.

“For Lawrence, Waitahuna, Milton, and Waihola the trail will support existing business, and allow for new opportunities for their communities, both recreationally and economically,” Anthony said.

The trail has been planned and developed by Central Otago Clutha Trails Limited (COCTL) with funding support and maintenance support from Provincial Growth Fund, NZ Cycle Trails extension and enhancement fund, Central Otago District Council, Clutha District Council, Otago Community, Trust, Clutha Development, Lions and Rotary, and private donations.

Approximately 10,000 people have used the Clutha Gold trail since January. A survey is open for those who have used the trail this season, and more responses are needed to collect information about the experience. Complete it here.
