Central cyclists can join a social ‘gravel bash’ bike ride on Saturday, December 23, organised by local business owner James Williamson.
Alexandra’s Willbike Cycling Central has organised the ’Xmas Gravel bash - The Matakanui Express’ for the past three years.
The ride is a 95km circuit and any bike will do, either a gravel, road or mountain bike.
James said there is no official time keeping or entry numbers and the emphasis is on fun, banter and laughs.
“The idea is to ride something bigger than you normally would, everyone arrives at the same time, or close to it and it's social and fun.
“It’s [purpose] is to build a community around riding.”
Departure times are staggered depending on ability, the first group leaves at 7.15am and the last at 9am.
The group meets at Chatto Creek Tavern at the 70km mark for a refreshment stop and then it is a “leisurely cruise” back to Alexandra for everyone.
The riders aim to be at Chatto Creek around 11.30am and meet friends and family, including some who will join in for the return leg back to Alexandra.

Riders need to abide by New Zealand road rules and keep an eye out for fellow participants.
There are two main climbs Crawfords and McIntosh Rds. The total elevation for the loop is 844m. Last year about 30 people took part in the free event.
