Alexandra Swimming Club (ASC) has scored more silverware after winning cups for most points for the junior and senior age groups during Waitangi Weekend.
One hundred and twenty five swimmers from seven to 26 years old, from 20 clubs, splashed out at the two-day meet at Alexandra Pool (February 4-5).
ASC secretary Shelley Ludlow said many young swimmers from the development squad entered their first meet.
“All swimmers gave it their best. It was a great opportunity to be part of the fun, cheering each other on to make amazing personal NZ recorded swim times.
“We also had our senior swimmers display their talent before heading off to university or work, a.k.a adulthood.”

“The ASC result is a credit to coaches Shane Allan and Brittney Goodrick and all the great training and effort all the kids put into their swimming,” Shelley said.
Wānaka swimmer Hana Carnie broke two Otago records in the 11 year old 50m and 200m backstroke events.

The age group winner for under nine boys went to Dane Tauti from South Otago Sharks and girls Faith Winter from ASC.
Age group winners for 10-11 year olds were Benjamin Winter (ASC) and Sophia Kivileva (Neptune).
Oamaru’s James Saol and Wānaka’s Stella Harper took home the 12-13 year old category.
ASC’s Liam Rees and Heidi Winter won the 14-15 year old level; Caleb Ludlow and Sophie Winter won the 16 years and over age group.

A total of 332 medals were awarded in individual events.
Shelley said organising meets takes a lot of volunteers; and 19 timekeepers, 14 qualified technical officials and two trainee officials made it happen.
Two volunteers Bronwyn Rees (ASC) and Chris Spence (Queenstown) completed technical official training for Swim Otago during the weekend.
Shelley thanked sponsors Webb’s Fruit, Amigos, Mt Iron Engineering, Foodstuffs South Island, Carrick Winery, Pioneer Energy, Badges and Medals and Pub Charity.
“Plus, a big thank you to Central Otago District Council and all the pool staff over the weekend for allowing this meet at [the] pool.”
