Council calls for residents to conserve waterCentral residents should conserve water as supplies get low, especially in Ranfurly and Omakau.

The Central Otago District Council (CODC) says it is starting to see the hot conditions affect water supplies.

"While Central Otago has avoided restrictions like those in neighbouring districts, it is now starting to see a significant reduction in flow in Ranfurly and Omakau,” CODC said in a statement today (Sunday February 6).

The message to conserve water is for everyone across the district, especially in Ranfurly and Omakau.

Here is a list of actions you can undertake to help ensure restrictions are not placed on water use in Central Otago:

  • Think twice before turning on your irrigation or washing your car.
  • If you are watering your garden, do so in the early morning or evening to reduce water lost to evaporation
  • Use a watering can or a hose with a hand-held trigger to minimise wastage and direct water only where needed.
  • Take shorter showers - every minute you don't spend in the shower saves seven litres of water.
  • Turn off the tap when brushing teeth - a running tap wastes 10 litres per minute.

CODC has turned off the irrigation in Maniototo Park to contribute to the community effort to conserve water.

CODC is checking the water network system for leaks; if you see one, please let the council know by phoning (03) 440 0056.
