Maniototo’s wish for an outdoor Christmas tree in time for Ranfurly’s 125th birthday celebrations has been boosted by an Otago Community Trust (OCT) $4,000 grant.
Spokesperson Janyne Fletcher said the project was coming together well.
“We’ve ordered it, and a deposit has been paid. It's really cool, and it’s going to be unique for Central Otago.
“The five metre tall, commercial quality tree is designed to be outside and will have lighting and decorations,” Janyne said.
A red, gold and lime green colour scheme has been chosen.
The Christmas Tree project is a partnership between Maniototo Business Breakfast Group and the Maniototo Lions Charitable Trust.
Janyne said the partnership is still looking for further support and a give a little page has also been created for people to contribute to.
Organisers say they hope the tree will help instil a sense of community pride and boost morale in the small rural town and that it may be a catalyst for other small projects around Ranfurly and the district.
The Central Otago Pony Club was also granted $7,000 by OCT at the May board meeting. This money will help with the club hosting the New Zealand Pony Club Springston Trophy (September 29 - October 1).
