What's on: Your weekend is a superheroSave your week, and take the time to do things that make you smile this weekend.

Take the time to do something you’d really love to do this weekend – we have a few suggestions for you.

Make this weekend your superhero. Saturday and Sunday are the days that can swoop in and save the rest of your week.

Here’s a few ideas for you to give your weekend superpowers. For further details on events and activities, check out our Things to do.

The art and sport of curling is this weekend’s must-watch.

This weekend is a unique chance to catch some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s finest curlers and some of curling’s interesting personalities, as teams compete this weekend at the Indoor curling rink at Iceinline in Alexandra.

“On Saturday, we’ve invited all the local curling clubs in the Idaburn curling conference to come and curl in the traditional crampet style,” says Alexandra curling rink manager Peter Henderson.

“That’s the way curling’s always been played, right back in history to Scotland.”

In crampet style curling, the stone is delivered with a sliding motion from a crampet or metal plate placed on the ice.

“We’re one of the only places in the world that still do that - there’s not many places where you can curl outdoors in the crampet style.

“In Europe they use the new hack style where you slide, and that’s what we’re playing on Sunday.

“The hack is very popular with our younger players.”

Because of the weather forecast for the weekend, it will be half a day of play starting at 1.00pm. Teams are coming from Dunedin, Cardrona and all throughout Central Otago.

A veritable who’s who of the curling world will be there, including the New Zealand president, and our own Peter Becker who has put together a team to compete.

Peter has skipped our curling teams at national level and has won many curling titles. He will be one to watch.

It might even inspire you to come back and have a go at curling for yourself.
