The shortest day of the year was celebrated in style when Probus Alexandra members gathered for a long lunch yesterday.

More than 50 members attended the winter solstice gathering, hosted at the Senior Citizens rooms on Skird St, where they were treated to a meal and good company.

Members aged 90 or over were also celebrated, with each being presented with a floral spray, acknowledging their involvement and dedication to the group.

Those members are Maureen McIntosh, Freda Robertson, Nancy McAuslan, Betty Leask and Joy Hawkes. 

Life members Russell Fawcett, Robyn Bowman and Jim Oliver were also acknowledged for their commitment to the group.

Probus Alexandra started in 1991 to provide people in the community with companionship, while also supporting their mental wellbeing.

There are currently 62 members, aged from their 70s up to 93, and membership was continuing to grow, secretary Joy Watson said.

The group gathers for bus trips once a month, which has so far included destinations like Glenorchy, Wānaka, Queenstown and Danseys Pass, among others.
