Pioneer Park in Alexandra will host a special ‘Play Day’ on October 31. Photo: FileIt was a soggy start to Play Week Aotearoa 2025 in Central Otago, with the first event in Alexandra having to be postponed on Monday (October 20).
Play Week is a national celebration led by Sport New Zealand - Ihi Aotearoa, highlighting the value play brings to our tamariki, whānau, and communities, and there are still plenty of opportunities for people to get involved.
Sport Central play and activities advisor Kate Hamilton said the Alexandra event has now been moved to October 31, in conjunction with the Lions Club.
A special play day is organised for Cromwell this Friday afternoon (October 24) at the Alpha Street park, featuring games, music, stories and nature activities for all children.
Ranfurly will also host a play day, on Thursday October 30 at the Maniototo Area School.
Play Week reminds people play is more than just fun – it’s how our children build confidence, creativity, friendships, and a lifelong love of being active.
"Play helps build confident, creative and connected tamariki and rangatahi,” Kate said.
“We hope Play Week 2025 is a reminder to give yourself – and your whānau – the time, space and permission to play... whatever that looks like for you.”
Sport Central is encouraging families to get outside, have some fun, make some mess and try something new or adventurous.
