Plastic Free July is not a platform for judgement.

Instead, it provides a forum for discussion, a chance to learn from others and see what alternatives are out there - and there are many.

Some might work for you instantly, others might take time and that is OK.

The Government recently announced it would phase out several problem and single-use plastics by mid-2025.

Items to be banned include drink stirrers, cotton buds, single-use produce bags, straws, cutlery, plates, bowls and fruit labels.

It will also include PVC and polystyrene food and drink packaging.

The phasing out process will be in three stages, starting in late 2022 for the easier to replace items.

We don’t have to wait until then though.

Instead, we can start adopting new habits now and learn from each other to get ahead of the game.

There are so many options and just one search online can showcase the endless possibilities.

As part of Plastic Free July, people have been sharing their alternative life hacks with the Wastebusters team, from swapping out liquid soap for soap bars and plastic milk bottles for glass alternatives.

A lot of people are welcoming the switch to reusable cups, beeswax wraps and refill systems.

Remember if you want to use your own cup or container, keep an eye out for the posters around town that highlight they are welcome.

The general consensus is that people are keen to do their bit, support each other and share their ideas.

So, keep them coming and keep up the good work.

Here are some reuse tips to consider:

  • Reusable produce bags for fruit and vegetables
  • Take a reusable container to the deli or cafe
  • Use a facecloth instead of a plastic loofah
  • Use a piece of fabric to wrap gifts instead of wrapping paper (some are plastic coated)
  • Buy milk in glass bottles
  • Use refill stations for cleaning products and pantry items
