The Māniatoto community can enjoy the pristine new library which opened earlier this week (Monday October 10).
The library is part of the Ministry of Education-led Maniototo Area School rebuild in Ranfurly in a new purpose-built space, being delivered by building company Breen over the next two years.
Central Otago District Council (CODC) mayor Tim Cadogan said although the library was smaller and holds fewer books than the previous one it is brand new and looks beautiful.
“It’s a bit different to other libraries in our district. The building is run by [Ministry of Education] and has been rebuilt by [them]... but CODC runs it, it’s a hybrid model.
“I’m really excited to see it… once people go in and have a feel for it, I’m sure they’ll absolutely love it.”
The school’s $11M redevelopment is due for final completion mid year 2023 with work on the junior block continuing.
The senior block of classrooms were completed in March this year.
Future development projects are planned for the playground, school grounds, sports turfs and gymnasium also to be completed over the next three years.
The school hopes to use the new offices and staff room at the start of term four.
New principal Melissa Bell will start in 2023 as current principal Joe Ferdinands will retire at the end of 2022.
There are seven libraries in Central, located in Alexandra, Clyde, Cromwell, Māniatoto, Millers Flat, Omakau and Roxburgh.
Membership is free to permanent residents and ratepayers. If you're not a member already, sign up here.
