Alexandra Swimming Club’s June Schaap is getting faster; she broke her own national backstroke records at the New Zealand Masters Swimming Championships in Hawkes Bay last week.
The master swimmer broke her 50m record (36.09) in the 55-59 age group in the first leg of the mixed medley relay with a time of 36.02.
She then went on to an even faster time of 35.31 in the backstroke final.
June’s time in the 100m backstroke improved by more than half a second.
Her new record is 1:19.94, down from 1:20.38.
ASC spokesperson Shelley Ludlow said they were very proud of June and it was great having her as part of the club.
June, 57, was taking part in the NZ Masters Swimming Championships at the Hawke's Bay Regional Aquatic Centre, May 25 -27.
In November 2022, June won six medals at the Pacific Masters Games (PPMG) on the Gold Coast two golds for backstroke, two silvers and two bronzes in her other freestyle and butterfly events.
