Twenty two Central Otago residents were granted New Zealand citizenship in a special ceremony in Central Otago District Council (CODC) chambers in Alexandra yesterday.Along with the official paperwork, the new citizens were presented with a native kōwhai seedling, which was propagated from a 400-year-old kōwhai tree on Bannockburn’s Te Kano Estate. The new citizens came from Australia, England, Scotland, South Africa, Tahiti, Pakistan, Northern Ireland, the Philippines and India. Amongst the new citizens was Jerald Anadase, originally from the Philippines who moved to New Zealand in 2017 with his then girlfriend Celine, and the pair settled in Auckland initially. They eloped to Queenstown in 2020, fell in love with the South Island scenery, had daughter Serene in 2021 and then moved to Cromwell in 2022.Pictured from left Celine, who is a nurse, daughter Serene (2) and Jerald Anadase. One new resident Alexandra Pearce, of Roxburgh, who has been in New Zealand for 50 years after emigrating as a child, had her 89-year-old father from Christchurch in the audience for the occasion. Central Otago District mayor Tim Cadogan said the ceremony had the biggest number of new citizens he had ever welcomed during his time as mayor, a role he has had since 2016. The new citizens were invited to share a snippet of how they have come to live in Central and Tim read those out. “We’ve got our own little ‘Love Actually’ going on . . . with these stories."Tim said gaining citizenship was a big step, a symbolic cutting of ties and an important watershed moment, deserving recognition. “Friends are the family you choose . . . and you’ve chosen our country to be yours.”Many new residents said they wanted to confirm their commitment to Aotearoa and belonging to whānau and that citizenship was a way to do that.Pictured are (back row, from left) Craig Blair, Jerald Anadase, Sarah Muir, Imran, Aidan Reilly, David Baxter, Mayor Tim Cadogan, Alvin Kumar, Richard McKay, Mary and Robert Mansell, Jake Parker, Vaiarii Tuhoe, and front row Emily Menzies, Musa Ismail, Essa Ismail, Zehra Naseer, Alexandra Perace, Michelle Calitz, Alice Baxter, Erica Davidson, Vicky Duff and Susie Wells.
