Bouldering, basketball, music and kai will all be included in the free, “Climb and Connect” community event which will be held this weekend at Molyneux Stadium.

Climb and Connect is a coordinated effort between the Alexandra Cultural Diversity Group and Welcoming Communities.

The event will be held at Molyneux Stadium on Sunday, 14 November, from 2 to 4pm.

Central Otago District Council Welcoming Communities Officer Deborah Beange says the event is a great way to engage people through sport and activities.

“We want to provide support to our culturally diverse community, but also build connections with our local community,” Deborad says. “Everyone is welcome to come along”.

“Everyone benefits in a community where people feel like they belong. There are social, cultural and economic benefits.

“Families will have an opportunity to give climbing a go at Bolder Inn or play basketball in the indoor gym.

“With fine weather we’ll be able to relax on the field, enjoy some refreshments and connect with others in the community in a relaxed environment.

“We’re searching for people who might be interested in playing instruments, if there is anyone who would like to be a part of this fun community event.”

WellSouth’s Jo O’Connor says being able to connect with others is absolutely essential for our wellbeing

“This is a free event so families can just come and enjoy hanging out with each other.

“It’s a chance to bring your friends along or to meet new people.

“It’s a chance to try something new, just relax on the grass or kick a ball around. Or maybe you might just want cake,” Jo says.

This is the first event for Welcoming Communities, which is a new programme adopted by the Central Otago District Council.

“Welcoming Communities supports communities to roll out the welcome mat for newcomers,” Deborah says.

“Communities that make newcomers feel welcome are likely to enjoy better social outcomes, greater social cohesion and stronger economic growth.

“Events like Climb and Connect play an important role in linking different parts of our community together.”
