On Thursday 28 October the Central Otago District Council, in conjunction with the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, hosted the world-exclusive first viewing of a series of photographs of Eden Hore Central Otago fashion garments.

The Eden Hore Central Otago Journey to date event, attended by about 85 invited guests, was held at the Orchard Garden in Alexandra. 

The evening’s presentation was emceed by Eden Hore Central Otago Steering Group Chair, Central Otago Mayor Tim Cadogan.

“Over the past few years there has been a lot of behind-the-scenes work, seeking out opportunities for the collection and finding ways to ensure that its magic can continue to be enjoyed into the future,” Mayor Tim says.

“It was exciting to share our experiences in the development of the Eden Hore Central Otago concept; hear from the steering group of advisors who are creating amazing opportunities for this collection and give a glimpse into some of the innovative projects we are gearing up for in the near future.

“‘Eden Hore’ plus ‘Central Otago’ adds up to a magical proposition that really engages people. 

“The Central Otago region has an opportunity now to honour Eden Hore’s singular vision, to do something really special and feel really proud about it. 

“We are excited to be at a point we can share more widely the story of the journey to date and the ‘where to next’?”

In late 2019 a group of internationally acclaimed fashion industry professionals, led by renowned photographer Derek Henderson, created a series of photographs of Eden’s high fashion garments in stunning Central Otago landscapes. 

The photographs are testament to the collaborative efforts of many helpers, fashion curators and textile conservation specialists, all drawn by the mystique of the Eden Hore Central Otago collection. 

The Central App’s Managing Director Vicki McLean was a guest on the night and says the collection showcases all that is great about Central Otago. 

"I remember this collection as a kid and admired it then. To see what the steering group has accomplished to honor Eden Hore was goosebumps material. 

“What a night / what a stunning collection and presentation - the photography just brings our region and the Eden Hore collection to life in such a unique way.  

“Made me feel so proud to live in this beautiful place. We are blessed." 

This photography project was developed in partnership with the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and Central Otago District Council.

The photographs, which have been produced as a limited-edition series, will soon feature in one of New Zealand’s leading contemporary art galleries – The Dowse Art Museum in Lower Hutt. 

The photos will be displayed alongside 25 of Eden’s couture garments in the “Eden Hore: High Fashion/High Country” exhibition as part of the gallery’s 50th anniversary programme of exhibitions. 

The exhibition is scheduled to open to the public on 4 December and will run for three months.
