Age is no barrier for a newly formed women’s soccer team in Alexandra who are seeking sponsors for uniforms.
The group of local women have decades of life experience, with the youngest in Year 9 at Dunstan High School and the oldest a working grandmother in her mid-50s.
The team have been training weekly, with the older contingent aiming to play in the Masters Games in Dunedin, from February 3-5, and then the wider group in a Central Lakes competition in 2024.
The idea behind the team is to build on the momentum of women’s football after New Zealand co hosted the FIFA Women’s World Cup earlier this year.
A team spokesperson said the women want to show their community that the mums, aunties and grandmothers can get fit and have fun playing the beautiful game.
Alexandra United Football Club (AUFC) has been loaning the group gear and has been a great help to get the team started.
Younger wahine, ages four to 12, can get involved with football in the Fantails programme run by AUFC, on November 28 from 4pm-5pm. It’s all about having fun, making new friends and improving skills, much like in the women's group.
AUFC also runs free summer football for primary school age children, born between 2010 - 2016, on Fridays at 4pm at Molyneux Park. The final week is December 8.
