An Alexandra man is filling a gap for local children by donating bikes made from salvaged bits and bobs.

Charitable organisation Up-cycles was started by Chris Foggin (Foggie) in his shed three months ago. 

Foggie said he’s focused on helping people, he’s had no funding and he’s donating his time to get the project moving.

“I’m passionate about the education piece around cycling… It never goes away for me, the joy and freedom of riding a bike.”

Up-cycles has donated a few kids’ bikes, trikes and balance bikes to children nominated via local primary schools and Oranga Tamariki.

One has gone to a child with a disability. Foggie said it has made a huge difference for the recipient who can now get around on wheels like any other kid.

Foggie is about to build a wooden frame inside a 20 foot shipping container to house his Up-cycles workshop, as his side hustle is growing.

Trail Journeys has donated 12 bikes in good condition and they’re set to go to people to use for fitness or as a means of transport. 

A classic bike was donated and sold to buy parts to complete other bikes.

“The council is letting me know if a bike comes into a transfer station and if it’s in good condition I will go in and pick and choose what I need,” Foggie said.

Originally from the United Kingdom, Foggie has lived in Central for the past six years, and can't see himself ever leaving.

“We want to show the world we are the best place to ride a bike… I’ve cycled my whole life and it doesn’t get better than here.”
