Treasure hunting at Wastebusters koha dayRecycling superstar Greig Anderson is preparing for the Wastebusters koha day on June 24. All proceeds will go to the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust, St John Alexandra and Puna Rangatahi

Wastebusters Alexandra is giving back to its community one last time.

The not-for-profit community enterprise, which is closing its Boundary Road site at the end of June, is hosting a koha (donation) day on Saturday, June 24.

All proceeds from the day will go to the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust, St John Alexandra and Puna Rangatahi, which supports youth across Alexandra and the Teviot Valley.

Communications coordinator Alexia Johnston said the aim was to ensure all funds remained in the community for the people of Central.

“It’s going to be a great day. Not only will every cent go back to some fantastic charities, people who purchase treasures on the day will be taking home a piece of history.

“There will be plenty to look forward to, aside from the usual treasure hunting. We’re aiming for a party atmosphere, with cake at 11am, and a coffee van on site. Remember to bring your reusable cup or you can use one of ours.”

Site manager Brendan Smith said the day was also about celebrating the work Wastebusters has done in the community over the past 23 years.

“We’re inviting everyone who loves Wastebusters, who has been part of our story, to come along and have some cake at 11am,” Brendan said.

“Koha Day is about bringing the community together to help us celebrate what we have achieved over the two decades and giving Wastebusters Alexandra the send off it deserves.”

Gates will be open 9am to 5pm.

Wastebusters is also holding two free workshops in collaboration with Central Otago REAP to help residents prepare for Plastic Free July. A chemical free cleaner workshop is on June 25 and a produce bag workshop on June 27,
