Community news is what The Central App news team works hard to bring you; the moments to make you smile and the information you need when it matters.

Here is a selection of our favourites and the most read stories of 2023.

The weather was important, and more than 4000 people read about the heavy snow watch for Central Otago in late March.

The weather forecast was also watched closely by organisers of the annual 66th Blossom Festival, along with those wanting to attend. Our story Weather forecast for Blossom Festival was well read, along with our story about cancellation of the Friday night events.

Police news was also well read, including the article Police execute arrest warrant on Alexandra address, Police make arrests, seize drugs and firearms and Missing woman found getting high numbers of readers.

Vehicle incidents such as Fatal crash on Bannockburn Rd and calls from the police for the community's help, including the article Police ask for sightings made the top read list.

Central Otago District Council services were of interest including when Central households’ three rubbish bins became four, CODC accelerated water supply compliance and the CODC chief executive resigned back in March.

Stories impacting people resonated such as when wild pigs plagued St Bathans, and childrens’ motorbikes were stolen in Cromwell.

Local successes at home and overseas were celebrated, for example when Central Campus students were on Country Calendar and a Cromwell rally driver made record books again.

Central residents did amazing things for worthwhile causes. The news team loved sharing the stories of Central firefighters who helped overseas, tackled the Sky Tower challenge and competed internationally, there were mountain climbers for mental health, Movember campaigns, leukaemia and breast cancer fundraising efforts and many more.

Arts, culture and heritage filled our news feed. Highlights were the new Kārearea sculpture for Clyde, music from locals such as Liz ConwayPoppies decorating Molyneux Estate street signs and celebrations of cultural diversity across Central.

The news team covered a wide range of Central sports stories, including cricket, BMX, gymnastics, athletics, rugby, soccer, equestrian, curling, ice hockey, ice skating, rowing, swimming, netball, hockey, snow sports, bowling and golf.

It was a year of informative content linked to local and central government elections, and fun too, including Halloween highlights and a streaker at the national bowls champs.
