The doors to Centrals newest art gallery are openJodi Ryan makes the most of Naseby’s warm weather while waiting to welcome visitors to Star Dust, the town’s newest art gallery.

Naseby is the place to go to see our newest art gallery 'Star Dust', giving visitors a chance to admire several types of works.

Building owner Phil Flanagan has 33 of his photographs on display, along with works by painter and sculptor Jenny Chisholm.

The final, but unintentional medium comes in the form of the building itself.

Phil has spent the past three years restoring the old stables, which dates back to 1865.

A collection of Phil Flanagan’s photographs are on display at his new gallery in Naseby.

He opened the doors to the gallery, called Star Dust, for the first time this month, just in time for the town’s busy season.

“It’s been great - there’s been lots of interest and sales.”

Turning part of the building into a gallery was something he had wanted to do for some time.

“I just didn’t realise I would be one of the artists.”

However, his eye for detail and ability behind the camera meant he had plenty of photographs to display, many of which were taken throughout Central Otago.

“I’ve always had an interest in photography and then I had enough encouraging comments to pursue it and thought ‘why not?”.

Last year Phil transformed a section of the Derwent St building into a movie theatre, which features rows of old armchairs and a large projector screen.

The movie theatre is back in business this summer, which will be available to the public for about four months.

Last year’s cinema screenings were particularly popular due to heavy rain events over the festive season.

Phil estimates he would have screened “hundreds” of films last season.

“It was so appreciated because there was nothing else anyone could really do.”

While the movies are still a popular drawcard, Star Dust is this season's main attraction.
