Alexandra Lions Club has conquered its latest fundraising driveParticipants start making ground at the beginning of the 70km journey

The group raised more than $5000 when it hosted a 4WD tour through Earnscleugh Station’s scenic back country on Sunday.

Proceeds will go to the Alexandra Volunteer Fire Brigade for a much needed Mule stretcher carrier, which it was now able to purchase.

The stretcher will provide maximum patient stability, which the community and wider district will benefit from during rescues.

Chief fire officer Russell Anderson said he was grateful to the Lions Club, landowner and community for supporting the cause.

Participants make their way through untouched landscape while listening to radio commentary by landowner Alistair Campbell.

The event, called Beyond the Locked Gates, is an annual fundraiser, which is growing in popularity.

Event convenor Barry McCall said last weekend’s drive featured 40 vehicles, 10 more than in previous years.

Stunning views were on offer all day.

However, registrations were limited to 40 to make sure it was a pleasant experience for everyone taking part, he said.

Participants were treated to panoramic views from the Old Man Range, overlooking Alexandra, Clyde, Cromwell and into the Teviot Valley.

The group’s lunch-stop offered untouched views and by afternoon they were able to explore the site where a transmission tower and large Obelisk rock stand, also known as Kopuwai.

Land owner Alistair Campbell provided radio commentary throughout the 70km drive, which finished at the station’s large-scale woolshed.

Four wheel drives begin another climb through tussock country.

The Lions Club has a circuit of about four stations it tours - one each year, Barry said.

“We’ll be doing one again next year at the same time.”
