A strong wind watch has been issued for parts of Central Otago, Fiordland, Southern Lakes and Southland, with possible severe gales expected from midday Sunday through to 2am Monday.

The MetService warning, issued on Saturday, advises residents and travellers to be prepared for potentially hazardous northwest winds during the 14-hour period beginning noon on Sunday December

7.

Winds are forecast to strengthen in the afternoon, with a moderate chance the alert could be upgraded to a full wind warning.

According to MetService, while not all areas will feel the full brunt of the conditions, those in exposed places could see wind gusts nearing severe gale strength.

“People should be cautious, particularly if travelling through exposed inland routes or high country roads,” a MetService spokesperson said. “It’s also a good idea to secure outdoor furniture and

structures ahead of time.”

The strong wind watch affects Fiordland, Southern Lakes and parts of Southland and Central Otago, including high country areas where wind effects are often magnified.

Motorists towing caravans or trailers, as well as those in high-sided vehicles, are advised to take extra care or delay travel where possible during the peak wind hours.

MetService will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates if a warning becomes necessary.
