Southern District Police are urging motorists to avoid non-essential travel as severe winds bring down trees and power lines across the region.
State Highway 1 is now closed between Clinton and Milton, with authorities warning that State Highway 8 between Lawrence and SH1 may also close if conditions worsen.
Detective Sergeant Hamish Fraser said strong winds had caused significant damage to infrastructure.
“We urge people to stay home, and not to travel unless you absolutely have to,” he said. “Anyone who has to drive should take extreme care.”
Police and road crews are working to clear debris, but motorists are advised to check Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s live updates before travelling or The Central App Roads
