MetService has issued a heavy snow watch and strong wind watch for Central until Wednesday morning (August 2).

Snow is forecast to lower to 300 metres early on Wednesday morning.

Snowfall could be heavy at times above 500 metres, and the amount of snow may approach warning criteria above 300 metres, especially in localised snow drifts.

Further snow showers are possible until Wednesday evening, mainly in the south.

Northwesterlies change to the southwest tonight (Tuesday August 1), and winds may approach severe gales in exposed places at times.

From Tuesday evening through to Wednesday morning, winds may exceed severe gale in exposed places, and the wind watch could be upgraded to a warning closer to the time.

Road snowfall warnings are in place from lunchtime today for the Lindis Pass and Crown Range Rd, with snow until this evening and possibly again on Wednesday morning.
