Snow and rain are falling across Central Otago today, but at this stage (1pm Sunday June 4) only the Crown Range is closed.

The Crown Range has been closed from Cardrona Village to Eastburn Road to allow crews to clear a stuck vehicle.

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has advised that once the road re-opens chains must be fitted when travelling the Crown Range due to current road conditions caused by ongoing snowfall, advises

"Grit has been applied near the summit, so extra caution is advised," QLDC said.

"Temperatures are dropping, so ice is expected to form in other areas of the road. Crews are monitoring this closely."

The Kawarau Gorge remains open and clear, but snow is falling on the Lindis Pass and motorists are advised to carry chains.

Fulton Hogan has reported Omakua to Ranfurly has snow on the road, and with snow continuing to fall, updates will continue to be provided throughout the day. Click on Roads.

Wet roads can be expected elsewhere across the district.

MetService has reported that a front, preceded by a moist northwesterly flow, was expected to move over the south of the South Island early this morning.

Much colder southerly winds follow the front, which should bring the snow level down to around 500 metres in Otago.
