A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck near Greymouth in the early hours of this morning.

The quake at 1.52am was at a depth of 5km and centred 10km north-east of Greymouth.

More than 1000 people, mostly on the West Coast, reported to GeoNet that they felt the earthquake.
