Women’s rugby in Central is gaining momentum, with a team (the Central Does) playing in the Otago premier development grade, and travelling fortnightly to Dunedin during the rugby season.
The Central Does had a solid win in their first game against Zingari Richmond in Cromwell at the start of the month (31-0 on April 1).
The Does won another pre-season game against Pioneer (from Gore) with 24-17.
Manager Paula Clark said the team was a mix of players from last season and new players aged between 16 and 37.
“We’ve got one lady returning after ten years away from rugby… we’ve got mums with babies on the sidelines and high school students too.”
Led by captain and prop Tiana Ngataki and vice captain and halfback Maddy Calder the team play Alhambra Union in Dunedin tomorrow at 12.45pm (Saturday April 22).
In the 2022 final the Does went down to Alhambra Union (20 -31) so tomorrow’s game is a chance for the Does to hit back.
Paula said they were expecting a “big test” but they were firmly focused on playing their game and going for tries.
The team aims to get into the premier grade within the next few years.
The third round of play sees them back at home lining up against Kaikorai (April 29).
