A lines crew is tending to a fire damaged power pole on Boundary Rd.

The pole caught fire early this afternoon, prompting nearby staff at NRG gym to alert its members that there was no power to the building.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand attended the incident, followed by Delta who is working to restore power to the area.

A staff member has confirmed the gym will be closed until power is restored.

The fire occurred at the top of the pole, near the wires, leaving a cross section severely damaged.

An Aurora Energy spokesperson confirmed mid-afternoon the fire was on a low voltage joint, which is a connection between a copper and aluminium conductor, at the top of the power pole.

Twenty customers were without power for just over an hour.
