Pint-sized plays coming to HāweaEight shortlisted, short-form plays will be performed for Hāwea audiences on May 1.

Comedy group Remarkable Theatre is bringing its ‘Pint-Sized Plays’ series to Hāwea early next month.

Pint-sized plays are short format, live theatre events that can be enjoyed in pubs over a pint with minimal props, a small cast, and limited sets and tech support.

The ‘pint-sized plays’ concept began in Wales in 2008 and quickly became established as a premier international competition for short plays.

Remarkable Theatre launched Pint-Sized Plays in New Zealand to encourage new writing and introduce a new audience to the entertainment of live theatre.

The playwriting competition has been whittled down to a final eight plays, and the top acts will perform for audiences at the Lake Hāwea Hotel on Saturday May 1.

“After deferring Pint-Sized Plays 2020 due to Covid, we're looking forward to performing the short-listed plays in 2021,” organisers said in a statement.

“This is our fourth year of Pint-Sized Plays, and each year we go from strength to strength.”

The Hāwea event is one of three taking place between April 30 and May 2.

Each night the audience will vote for their preferred script, with the winning playwright being announced on the final night (in Queenstown on Sunday May 2).

Pint-Sized Plays will take place at the Hāwea Hotel on Saturday May 1, 7pm. Tickets cost $20, available here.
