A public meeting will be held in Queenstown tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday April 21) to support the government’s freedom camping consultation. 

Tourism minister Stuart Nash released a discussion document early this month (April 9) with ideas on how to better manage freedom camping and reduce the negative impacts on local councils and communities, as well as the country’s ‘100% Pure’ brand.

“The public meetings are a good opportunity for people to get information and ask questions in person,” Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) tourism policy manager Danielle McKenzie said.

“I would encourage people to visit the MBIE website so they know what the proposals are, and can provide feedback on areas of interest.”

Information including a one-page summary, discussion document ‘Supporting Sustainable Freedom Camping in Aotearoa New Zealand’, and an online survey, are available on the ‘Have Your Say’ section of the MBIE website.

There is also an online webinar on Thursday April 22 (6pm-8pm, registration required) for those unable to attend a meeting.

The Queenstown meeting will be held on Wednesday from 1pm-3pm at Crowne II, Crowne Plaza, 93 Beach St.
