It’s been a welcome quirk of Central Otago for many - blue signs displaying parking rules that have largely gone unenforced. But be warned: consequences for bad behaviour are on the way.

In recent months Central Otago District Council (CODC) engaged a contractor to provide parking enforcement services, with Cromwell streets initially on its radar.

While the council began with an education campaign to remind motorists of expected behaviour, it signalled a shift in approach on Thursday (July 24): parking enforcement is coming soon.

“You may receive a ticket if you’re parked on yellow lines, blocking footpaths, overstaying times limits (or) in a mobility space without a permit,” the council said in a post to its Facebook page.

“Let's keep our streets safe and accessible - making sure footpaths stay clear and parking spaces are available for those who need them.”

Earlier, CODC regulatory services manager Lee Webster said the change in approach was partly in response to complaints from the public about unsafe or inconsiderate parking.

Motorists breaking parking rules could face fines ranging from $20 to $750, depending on the offence, from the end of this month.

“Our aim is to keep our streets safe and accessible. We want to ensure roads remain clear, mobility spaces are available for those who need them, and to promote responsible parking practices,” Lee said.

“If everyone does their part, drivers won’t ever need to see a ticket on their windscreen.”

He also urged members of the public to be “kind and respectful” to any parking warden doing their job.

Meanwhile, a community survey undertaken by the council inviting feedback on whether time-restricted parking areas are in the right places across the district closed on Monday.
