A day at the Omakau Trots is a tradition for many Central families; the day is known for its great atmosphere and entertainment for everyone.

The January 2 annual harness racing event has free entertainment for children, Fashion in the Field, plenty of food and beverage stalls, and edge of your seat horse racing.

Central Otago Trotting Club president Graham Sinnamon said the organisers were following “a well established path” but it was a really busy time of year to be pulling everything together.

“I’d hate to think how many hours have been put in.”

He said more help was required on the day.

“I’ve got the call out as we’re still looking for a community group who could be interested in fundraising, get in touch with me today.”

New this year is a photo board competition with a one hour scenic flight as a prize.

Graham said there would be more opportunities to win shares in a racehorse syndicate too.

The event is made possible due to the committee and volunteers at the Omakau racecourse who have been putting in the work to get everything ready, from shoeing horses to getting grit down in the car park and mowing grass.

Graham said without the support of major sponsor Narellan Pools and other local businesses helping out, the event could not keep happening year on year.

The day’s main race is a $30,000 Group 3 race attracting some of the top pacers from around the South Island. The first race is at 12.02pm, and the final one is planned for 5.36pm.

Families can take a picnic along, it’s $10 on the gate per adult entry, children are free. Other items to remember are your deck chairs, sunhats and sunscreen.

Motor camper owners can stay over at the racecourse thanks to the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association camping packages that include New Years Eve too. Find out more information here.

The first racing at the Central Otago Trotting Club took place in 1965.
