The new owner of the Omakau Hall has ties to the area, having grown up in the town.

Raine & Horne salesperson Rhys Chamberlain said the purchaser of 7 Wilson St was from Dunedin, but used to live in Omakau.

“I don’t know much about the [purchasers] plans for it. I know [they] don’t plan to knock it down.”

Rhys said that there were three registered bidders at the auction on January 24 for the property.

“It didn’t sell at auction. There was a multi-offer after the auction, that was pretty good.”

The proceeds from the hall sale will go towards the Omakau Community Hub project.

The 1950s hall is 430sqm, on 875sqm of land and it has multiple rooms, including main hall, stage and backstage area, two smaller meeting rooms, a kitchen and bathrooms.

On the walls inside are the First and Second World War rolls of honour.

Rhys said there was never all that much on the market in Omakau, but there was always interest from buyers, albeit a little less than the main towns such as Alexandra and Cromwell.

“You get more for your money in Omakau.”
