Work on Alexandra’s newest health building is ramping up, with approximately 35 to 40 people working on site daily at the corner of Tarbert and Fox streets.

The Central App was invited on a tour of the building together with the HealthCentral team, Medispace, which is a company specialising in health development designs, and Central Otago District Mayor Tim Cadogan.

HealthCentral general manager Jenaya Smith said it was exciting for staff to be able to see the spaces they would work in defined, and that many of them had not had a look around for the past few months.

“Lots of us walk past everyday . . . there is huge excitement [within our team] that it is getting closer to [being finished].”

Mayor Tim said the building was “absolutely wonderful” and the development was a vote of confidence in the strength of the town and its growth.

HealthCentral will be the primary tenant of the new building, expected to be completed mid 2024.

The next key stages for the building will be completing the external cladding, scaffolding removal and the civil works and car park.

The grid ceiling and lift will be installed within the next few weeks.

Breen construction has several subcontractors on site including; Aotea Electric, Queenstown Insulation, Foleys Plumbing, Grant Cooper Roofing, Braiden Plastering, Rayners, MR Decorating, Rabette Brick & Block and Contego.

Nurse Rona looks at storage areas on the first floor, while a contractor works overhead on electrical services.

Heather and Jenaya inspect the one of the rooms that will be used by office and administration staff on the first floor.

The tour covered the ground floor spaces where internal partitions are all up, defining the spaces, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning services are being worked on.

The planned services will help HealthCentral better meet the increasing demand for acute care as a result of population growth and increased visitors to Central.

In addition to the general practice, a number of other tenants, including physiotherapy, mental health and wellbeing support, a pharmacy, dentist and a café are anticipated.

Rooms for visiting specialists, consultants, counsellors and other health service providers have also been allowed for.

Local company Breen Construction is contracted to deliver the project for Queenstown investment group Mackersy Property.
