A social community group centring on caring and aimed at younger adults new to Cromwell is launching in early May.

Called Manaakitanga Tirau, the group’s name encompasses the desire to connect with our community, to care and support one another through hospitality and kindness.

Manaakitanga Tirau is the idea of a small group of young people who recently moved to the Cromwell area.

The group met last weekend to brainstorm ways to help network, support one another, and to connect with wider community events.

“From here, Manaakitanga Tirau has a presence on Facebook and you are encouraged to share your ideas for events and activities to help people transition to the Cromwell community and make social connections,” said Cromwell Newcomers Coordinator, Sharon Smid.

Although some activities will be organised to welcome and introduce people, Manaakitanga Tirau wants to provide opportunities for singles, couples and families to share spontaneous shout outs to share experiences and activities together e.g. Dads doing activities with their children or ladies enjoying a break.

The group is aimed at all recent arrivals irrespective of their nationality, and encourages diversity and inclusion, Sharon said.

“Yong Bao Duo Yuan Wen Hua” is to embrace all cultures.

“Diversity is having a seat at the table. Inclusion is having a voice; belonging is having that voice heard.”

"Come along to the launch on Sunday 1 May from 2-4pm at the Lowburn Hall to meet with others and share more ideas for people to collaborate and connect, as it is important that our taiohi/ young people steer the waka."
