Alexandra's Molyneux Cricket Club [MCC] needs more senior players to help fill gaps before the season begins.

MCC president Adrian Morgan said a recruitment drive had started to connect with potential talent and attract new players.

“Recent challenges, including player unavailability due to work commitments, relocation and injuries, necessitated a search for new players,” Adrian said.

MCC and Blacks Hill Club, based in Poolburn, have collaborated to form a combined senior team to enter the Otago country senior competition.

“We have successfully filled the gaps in our playing roster . . . we have assembled a handy team to enter the [senior] cricket competition.

“Working closely with the Blacks Hill Club allows us to create even more playing opportunities for players wanting to test themselves at the senior level.”

Pre season training has started for senior players, which is on Tuesdays at 6.30pm at the Molyneux Park nets.

Adrian said the club has picked up a few new players, but more keen cricketers were still welcome.

“Someone turned up last night who didn’t even know we had cricket in town, he thought it was only softball. So we want to get the word out.”

Players to watch for the season are all-rounder and Hawke Cup player Charanjit Singh, opening batsman Mika Tait, who is in year 12 at Dunstan High School, and batsman and spin bowler Barry White, who is also a veteran from the Blacks Hill Club.

Adrian wished to thank Alexandra’s Brodie Costello who has put his hand up to be the senior team coordinator for the 2023/24 season.

MCC will miss Sam Bastin, whose performance made a significant impact last season.

The first game for the combined team is on Saturday October 14, and likely to be in Alexandra.

Family friendly MCC is based at Alexandra’s Molyneux Park with teams across all age categories.

Smash play for youngsters (ages 5-12) is focused on developing skills and Saturday morning cricket is for ages 8-12.

Girls are welcome and with a few more signed up MCC may be able have a girls-only Saturday team.

Registration information is on MCC Facebook page.
