Metservice has issued a strong wind watch for Inland Southland, Southern Lakes and Central Otago.
North to northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.
A front, preceded by strong northerly winds, moves onto the South Island from the west and lies over the upper South Island tomorrow.
Heavy Rain Warnings are in force for southern and central Westland, the Otago headwaters and northwest Nelson.
In addition, Strong Wind Watches are in force for Central Otago until 6pm this evening.
Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be
hazardous.
Area: The headwaters of the Otago lakes and rivers
Valid: 10 hours from 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm Saturday
Forecast: Expect 80 to 120mm of rain to accumulate on the divide, and
60 to 80mm within 15km east of main divide. Peak rates of 10 to15mm/h.
