The region's senior women take centre stage this afternoon as the Blossom Festival’s 27th Senior Queen is set to be crowned.

Three amazing women from Central and Wānaka have been nominated for Senior Queen in recognition of their contribution to their community.

The women were introduced to the Senior Queen judges - Central Otago District mayor Tim Cadogan, Senior Queen founder Liz Pratt and Tall Poppy Real Estate Central Otago owner Peter Hishon - at a special High Tea in Clyde on September 12.

The Senior Queen has been a fixture in the festival since 1996, celebrating the wonderful senior women in our community and their contribution.

Today (September 19) the 2023 Senior Queen will be crowned at a special event at the Alexandra District Club.

A fashion show from Alexandra businesses will provide the afternoon’s entertainment and members of the public are invited to join for the festivities and afternoon tea, with tickets ($15) available at the district club from 1.30pm.

Clyde and Districts Lions representative Sue Noble-Adams, and former Senior Queen entrant, said the event would be a fun experience for all.

Blossom Festival event manager Martin McPherson said the crowning was the first official event of the Blossom Festival each year and he was excited to see who would take out the title.

The nominees are Angela Pratley (Alexandra) representing the Combined Lions Clubs of Clyde & Districts and Alexandra, Linda Leckie (Alexandra) representing the Alexandra Senior Citizens and Jill Checketts (Wānaka) representing 50 Squadron (Alexandra) Air Training Corps.

The Central App will advise the winners later today.
