At 2.4 metres wide and 4.6 metres long the Clyde Playcentre (CP) Blossom Festival float has been a big undertaking, requiring hours and hours of work from local families.

Flower folder and mum of three Lauren McIntyre said she has a whole new respect for people who create floats.

“This is my first year, and I have really enjoyed it… but after this I’ll have to find a new hobby.

“I’d hate to think how many hours it has taken. I did 20 hours, just me, last week. Then there has been three people for three hours every night.”

It’s been a family affair with Lauren’s Dad, David Dougherty (a former builder and woodwork teacher) building all the framing and sides and her husband folding crepe paper flowers alongside her and “multiple movies” in the evenings.

Her two-year-old daughter has also been ‘helping’ with folding and fixing flowers to the balloons.

“The playcentre families have been amazing, many have been taking paper home to make blossoms,” Lauren said.

Lauren said moving the trailer around hadn’t been an issue as “one of the playcentre mums reversed that trailer like a boss” down a long driveway.

The playhouse component of the float is going to be reused as a raffle prize. Tickets will be for sale at the lost children's tent on Saturday In The Park.

Lauren thanked GWD Toyota for lending the organisation the space for the float to be stored and worked on.

The CP float is based on the Disney Pixar movie Up and has as its catchphrase ‘adventure is out there’.

Blossom Festival event manager Martin McPherson said procession numbers - eight competitive floats and 40 items (including pipe bands, vintage cars and florreys) - were slightly down on last year but in line with the usual average.

The grand parade is on Saturday September 23 at 11.45am.
