Mayor’s column: Coronation conundrum

I reckon I’m at an age where I should have a clear view what I think about things but when it comes to the Coronation, I really find myself betwixt and between.

On the one side, I am a history nerd and on Saturday night at stupid o’clock I could sit in my comfy chair and watch history be made half a world away.

And there is a big part of me as I write this on Friday thinks I really should. But there is a bigger part of me knows that I won’t. The safe bet is that I will record it, leave it on the planner for a year or two and then delete it without ever watching it.

 So why the ambivalence?

I know some people who are getting dressed up and having high teas and I imagine a high old time of it getting ready for and watching the event and I wish them well. On the other hand, the voices that say that the money spent on the pomp and ceremony, if not the royal system in total would be much better invested in other parts of society resonate too.

I can see good reasons for both the celebration and the protest.

What I do know for sure though is that I have still not got my head around the fact that in a few weeks’ time, we will mark King’s Birthday weekend; my brain and mouth are still having trouble adjusting to that change.

Maybe I am showing my age after all.
