Maniototo Area School’s (MAS) principal Melissa Bell says the year’s focus is ‘grit’ with staff supporting students to be ambitious, resilient and determined in their approach to learning.
Melissa said the first few days back at school had been really positive.
“There is a great vibe and we are really pleased with the strong sense of focus in both the primary and secondary school.
“We have completed prefect training and on Wednesday, January 31 all classroom programmes were up and running.”

The school roll has grown by 13, to 151 students. The year nine cohort is bigger than in previous years.
Melissa said the higher year nine numbers meant more subject options on offer; this year drama and film would be introduced, along with senior history and art.
“The first term is about commitment, making sure we prioritise learning and establish good work habits to set up well for the year,” she said.
On the subject of cell phones, at MAS students have always handed phones in and there are no changes planned to the usual process.
“They are allowed to collect [them] if they need to for a particular lesson, but phones are kept at the school office.”
A new teacher has joined the team; Katie Herbert is job sharing in the year five and six class.
She lives on a sheep and beef farm in Kyeburn, is a mother of two girls and previously taught at Palmerston Primary School.
A meet the teacher community event is planned for February 22.
The school has introduced a new senior uniform featuring a new summer shirt.
