A series of free, hands-on workshops teaching people how to repurpose old clothing is part of Central Otago REAP’s Sustainability Series.

Plastic Free July is supported by Central Otago District Council (CODC), and starting this weekend, workshops will guide ākonga (participants) to upcycle what they already have — from turning old t-shirts into undergarments, to sewing beanies out of woollen jerseys.

Attendees will also learn practical skills like hand stitching, hemming, patching, and visible mending.

“People are welcome to bring their own materials and sewing machines — or use what we have on hand,” ACE team leader Emma McLean said.

“The goal is to reuse, repair and reduce waste while learning something new alongside others.”

One of the tutors, local dentist Amelia Paterson, said she was excited to share how everyday items can be transformed into something useful, functional — and beautiful.

The first workshop kicks off this Saturday (July 19) and is already filling fast, with two more running in August.

Workshops are also coming to Cromwell and Ophir in coming weeks.

“These sessions are about more than mending — they’re about making connections,” Emma said.

“We’re seeing amazing intergenerational learning happen, where knowledge is shared both ways and we grow together as a community.”

Following Plastic Free July, there’s a lot more happening as part of REAP’s Sustainability and Community Learning kaupapa:

  • Eco-friendly, affordable cleaning products
  • Clay Over Takeaway – make your own reusable clay cup
  • Garden to Plate – grow, harvest, and preserve kai
  • Repair Café – breathe new life into broken items
  • Ahurei Ākonga: Festival of Adult Learning
  • Te Reo Māori – online learning and local conversation club

They welcome everyone — beginners, curious learners, and those keen to share skills.
