A major traffic incident has caused power lines to come down across the Shotover Bridge, with SH6 likely to be closed most of the day.
"Power lines have come down across Shotover Bridge, completely closing SH6," a Queenstown Lakes District Council spokesperson says.
"This is likely to be the cause of the local power outage too. Due to the complexity of the situation the road is likely to be closed for much of the day.
"Alternative route to/from Queenstown is via Arthur's Point but expect major delays. Traffic control is in place at Tucker Beach and will also be at Shotover roundabout as soon as they can get access. Traffic light sequencing in the Queenstown CBD is being adjusted to help as much as possible.
"Further updates when we have them but we don't expect the situation to change anytime soon. In the meantime, please be patient if you're stuck in traffic and don't travel unless you absolutely have to."
