Not-for-profit group Keep Alexandra Clyde Beautiful (KACB) is calling for volunteers to help at community planting sessions on two upcoming Sundays (April 16 and May 6).
KACB chairperson Beverley Thomson said last season's plantings at Shaky Bridge Reserve were going well and the group would be adding to the diversity of native plants there this year.
“Shaky Bridge Reserve is a well trafficked area with walkers and cyclists,” she said.
“The new planted area will improve our image for visitors to Alexandra. It is part of the bridge-to-bridge walk, and on the way to the clock, Graveyard Gully and beyond.
“It will also help promote our unique Central Otago plants, from the Clyde Railhead Community Eco-nursery.”
The Shaky Bridge Reserve planting area is in the gully beside the path between Shaky Bridge and Lookout Dr, and the mowed area.
Previously, it was overrun with rank grass, broom, cotoneaster and other weeds.
For Sunday’s working bee the eco-nursery has provided 71 plants and Alexandra Four Square will put on morning tea.
Beverley thanked Central Otago District Council for a grant towards water connection, irrigation, and mulch which was transported by Allied Concrete and John Patterson.
Volunteers need to bring their own gloves and gardening tools, with work starting at 10.30am.
The second working bee is at Lookout Reserve ((between Little Valley Rd and Lookout Dr) from 11am -1pm on May 6.
