A little birdie told us Gerry McCarthy got his first hole in one at the Dunstan Golf Club on his 65th birthday - and just in time for Christmas.
The Clyde player confirmed to The Central App this indeed was the case and he was proudly going to make a plaque to display the prized ball as a memoir.
Playing with three other golfers in his regular Sunday competition, the hole-in-one had several witnesses, and the tradition followed with the club putting on a shout for members in the field at the bar afterwards.
“Actually back in the day the players used to shout everyone,” he said.
Hole-in-ones were quite a rare occurrence in golf and Gerry said only about 2 to 3 per cent of players ever got one.
Gerry has been playing golf for about 20 years and said he and his mates stared at the ball in disbelief, as it sat on the hole for about 10 seconds, before finally dropping in.
“It was leaning against the flag and the next thing it disappeared.”
