Manorburn Curling Club members have reason to celebrate after winning gold at the New Zealand Masters Games in Dunedin earlier this week.

Anthony McLean skip for ‘The Manoshcorchers’ said they were a bunch of good mates and they had a lot of fun together.

“We’ve been together for three or four years. At the last masters we got a bronze.”

The team consists of Anthony, Paul McCarthy, Bradley Lietze and Shane Ryan.

Anthony said they knew they were in the running as there was a leaderboard that was updated throughout the competition.

His team won every game apart from their first, which they lost by one.

“That [initial] loss was due to celebrating way too hard on the night before the competition. But then we came right.”

The Manorburn Curling Club has had a ripper couple of seasons Anthony said.

“We’ve been back-to-back Macraes winners, and then we went on to win the Nicholson New Zealand title for crampit curling.

“We’re [strong] and pretty hard to be reckoned with.”

Anthony said the social nature was a feature of the masters, with wives, family members and kids from local boarding schools cheering on the curlers and sharing meals together.

“It's all about camaraderie, the teams and the club. It’s not just the guys you usually are up against, lots of out of towners are there and there were two ladies' teams from Cromwell this year.”
