Clyde Fruitgrowers Association’s (CFA) annual golf tournament raised $10,000 for orchardists affected by cyclone Gabrielle in Hawkes Bay last Friday (April 21).

The number of golfers was slightly down this year but organisers were thrilled with the amount of money raised.

CFA spokesperson Kris Robb said fundraising was important however other positive aspects also flowed from the day's golf.

“The golf is all about getting off the orchard, and it’s an opportunity to get together with our associated trades, do some networking and build camaraderie.”

The format was a nine hole, three person ambrose played at Dunstan Golf Course.

Bragging rights went to the team from Fortune Fruit of Sam Gibbs, Blair Davidson and Mike Direen (PGG Real Estate); they won the Federation Cup for best net score.

The Annan Shield went to Central Pac led by Tim Hope, for the best combined score from their two teams.

Local businesses donated items to auction and all the proceeds went to Hawkes Bay growers to use as they see fit.

Auction items included a day's digger hire, electric pruners, horticultural sprays, and vouchers for food, drink and other treats.

Kris thanked major sponsor Fruitfed Supplies which organised the auctioneer, a barbecue and also coordinated other sponsors to provide items to auction.

Farmlands, EB Engineering, Clyde Cartage and excavation and BAHCO also supported the tournament.

The cost to horticulture of cyclone Gabrielle in the Hawke’s Bay has been estimated by industry groups at nearly $1.5B.

Another fundraising activity - this time for Vanuatu, which has been devastated by two cyclones - will take place this weekend.

The band Vanzeti will play at Monteith's Brewery Bar in Alexandra on April 29 from 6.30 -9.00pm. For more information see the What’s On guide.
