The Central Otago District Council (CODC) will start its Stepping UP classes again this week, with classes in Roxburgh, Alexandra, and Cromwell.
CODC Digital Services Librarian Emma McLean says things will be a little different with Covid-19 guidelines to follow but it is a fantastic opportunity for those people looking to learn digital literacy skills.
“Our classes are starting up again after being cancelled with Covid but we are now running with limited numbers and following the covid guidelines,” she says.
“They are our free digital Literacy classes that support senior members of our community and actually anyone that needs help with being safe and confident using digital devices.”
The CODC Libraries are partnered with Stepping UP to run their digital literacy programs.
“We also offer Skinny Jump which is a programme designed to help more New Zealanders gain access to affordable broadband at home; providing heavily subsidised connectivity to thousands of households at risk of being digitally excluded due to cost,” Emma says.
“Jump is a flexible prepaid service, offering 30GB of data for just $5, a quarter of the price of the cheapest commercial services available.”
“We have some new programs for you to sign up for," Emma explains.
“Appy Seniors - 2hr classes. Become app-savvy and gain digital confidence by understanding how to access, download, and use.
“Digital Introductory Pathway - 4 x 2hour classes that cover reasons to go online, such as communicating with family, becoming less dependent on others, discovering suitable digital devices, and pursuing hobbies.
“Digital Wellbeing - 4 x 2hour classes that address concerns about protecting privacy and keeping safe online.”
