Volunteer experts - in everything from sewing to digital support - are needed for the next of sustainability workshops from Central Otago REAP.

The next Repair and Care Cafe on October 11 at Alexandra Community House will include a seed and plant swap and sports gear share, alongside volunteer expert advice on a range of different topics - topped off with a community BBQ.

ACE team leader Emma McLean said Central Otago has always had a spirit of ‘making do’: fixing, repurposing, and creating with what they have.

Over the past few months, that spirit has been alive and well through a series of sustainability workshops run by Central Otago REAP, with the support of Central Otago District Council.

From Make and Mend workshops in the Māniatoto, Cromwell, and Alexandra, to Repair and Re-purpose sessions, people have been learning how to give clothes, household items, and materials a new lease of life.

“It’s practical, it’s affordable, and it’s keeping waste out of the landfill,” Emma said.

There have also been hands-on workshops in eco-friendly cleaning products - teaching people how to swap out chemicals for simple, effective homemade alternatives.

“Our popular ‘Clay Not Takeaway’ series has sparked creativity while reducing single-use packaging, and the Garden to Plate series continues to connect people with the soil, seeds, and seasonal kai that keep our communities thriving.”

Emma said the workshops weren’t just about skills, they were about connection and community.

“Every session brings together locals who want to learn, share ideas, and take steps toward a more sustainable lifestyle. Together we’re proving that sustainability doesn’t have to be complicated – it’s about small, practical changes and supporting each other along the way.”
