Alexandra’s Flames Ice Hockey club is pumped to host international team ‘The Canadian Moose’ today, to promote the sport, play games and lead practices for age group teams.

Flames president Trevor Lawrence said the Moose were a travelling team, who used to come every few years to New Zealand.

“I remember them coming from when I was first here 20 years ago . . . [and] their recent visit and game in Canterbury had about 700 people watching.”

The team and their entourage of about 40 people will visit a local primary school, then spend time coaching Under 12s, Under 15s and Under 18s Flames players before playing games against Flames men’s and women’s teams.

Trevor said the barbecue would be on, spectator entry to IceInline was free, and the main event would be the two games against Flames adult teams on Wednesday evening.

The Alexandra women’s team, which was recently formed, will play at 7.15pm, and the men's senior game will follow at 8.20pm.

Trevor said the season looked like it would be extended to the end of August thanks to the new roof over the community facility.

“We’re celebrating the new roof with a Winter Classic Tournament for adult teams on 9,10 and 11 of August.

“Another team ‘The Goons’ from Auckland are coming for a visit too, so we’d love to have the community turnout to support and watch ice hockey.”

The club recently held a Southern Ice Hockey League tournament for Under 12-year-olds. Three teams, 27 children in total from Alexandra, took part on July 27 against teams from Queenstown, Dunedin, Mackenzie, and Gore.

“All the upcoming events are on the calendar online and we welcome new players to get into the sport.”
