Tinder dry conditions are keeping Central Otago fire crews busy.

Crews from Clyde, Dunstan, Alexandra and Tarras were called to a grass fire in the Waikerikeri Valley area at 1.50pm today, while more crews are on their way to another grass fire on Moutere Disputed Spur Rd, near Chatto Creek.

The fire in the Waikerikeri Valley area has affected about one hectare of land, but has been contained.

Some of those crews are now responding to the fire on Moutere Disputed Spur Rd, which is also being attended by Omakau and Blackstone.

No further details were available.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Bailey Wells said conditions were still very dry and Central Otago remains under a prohibited fire season.

The Central, Naseby, Upper Waitaki Lakes, Glendhu Bluffs and Lake Ōhau zones moved from a restricted to a prohibited fire season on December 18.

A prohibited fire season means a total ban on open-air fires and all previously granted fire permits are suspended.

Bailey said it was important people remained vigilant, even when doing tasks like mowing lawns, which could cause sparks to ignite.

Anyone who sees smoke should call 111.
